How Far in Advance Should You Book a Wedding Magician?

When you're planning a wedding, entertainment can sometimes end up surprisingly far down the list.

The venue gets booked. Then the photographer. Flowers, dresses, suits, transport and all the other details start falling into place.

But there's one piece of advice I regularly give couples:

Don't leave your daytime wedding entertainment until last.

The best wedding suppliers can be booked well in advance, and wedding entertainment is no different.

From my own experience with ACMAGIC, the majority of couples book me around 12–18 months before their wedding.

Some book considerably earlier.

In fact, I've even had couples choose to book their ACMAGIC experience before they've booked their wedding venue.

So, when should you start looking?

Is 12–18 Months Before the Wedding Too Early?

Not at all.

For many of my couples, 12–18 months is completely normal.

This is particularly important if you're planning a popular Saturday wedding or already have a specific supplier in mind.

Booking early isn't simply about ticking another job off your wedding-planning list.

It's about giving yourself the opportunity to choose the suppliers you genuinely want rather than eventually having to choose from whoever happens to still be available.

Why Do Couples Book ACMAGIC So Far in Advance?

A large proportion of my couples first discover ACMAGIC at wedding fayres and venue open evenings.

Others find me through social media, recommendations and wedding platforms such as Bridebook.

But there's an important difference between simply looking at photographs or reading about a wedding entertainer online and actually experiencing what they do.

At wedding fayres and open evenings, couples can see the magic performed live.

They can experience the reactions for themselves, ask questions and, importantly, decide whether my personality and style are right for their wedding.

What If You Can't See ACMAGIC at a Wedding Fayre?

You don't necessarily have to wait until the next wedding show.

I regularly arrange a Zoom consultation and live demonstration for couples who want to find out more.

For me, that consultation is an important part of the process.

I'm not interested in simply telling a couple, “I'll perform magic for two hours.”

I want to understand their wedding.

How many guests are coming?

What's their venue like?

What's the approximate timeline?

When will photographs be taking place?

Are there periods when guests might be waiting?

Are both families already familiar with one another, or will lots of people be meeting for the first time?

Only then can we start looking at where entertainment can add the most value.

Don't Just Book a Magician — Plan the Experience

This is one of the reasons some couples book ACMAGIC immediately after a live demonstration or consultation.

They aren't simply booking a magician.

We're discussing how a bespoke ACMAGIC experience can fit into their particular wedding day.

No two weddings are exactly the same, so I don't believe the entertainment should simply be dropped into an arbitrary two-hour slot.

The drinks reception might be the perfect opportunity at one wedding.

At another, there could be a different part of the day where interactive entertainment would add considerably more value.

That's why the consultation matters.

Why You Shouldn't Leave Daytime Entertainment Until Last

Couples understandably spend a lot of time thinking about what their wedding will look like.

But it's equally important to think about what the wedding will feel like for your guests.

There are natural periods during almost every wedding when guests are waiting, mingling or meeting people they don't know.

One of the biggest examples is the drinks reception.

The newlyweds may disappear for photographs while dozens of guests are left together, sometimes for an hour or more.

That's not a problem if you've planned for it.

It's actually a fantastic opportunity.

Interactive close-up magic can bring groups together, start conversations and give guests a shared experience while other parts of the wedding are taking place.

What Happens If You Leave Booking a Wedding Magician Until Later?

It is always worth asking.

I don't want couples reading this article to assume that if their wedding is six months away — or even much closer — there's no point getting in touch.

There may still be availability.

But the closer you get to your wedding date, the greater the possibility that your preferred suppliers will already be booked.

That's particularly relevant when you want a specific person, rather than simply a particular type of supplier.

There's only one of me and I can only be at one wedding at a time.

So if you've seen ACMAGIC perform, love the style and already know you'd like me to be part of your wedding, securing the date earlier removes that uncertainty.

Should Entertainment Be One of the First Things You Book?

It certainly can be.

I've had couples book ACMAGIC before they've even confirmed their venue.

That might sound unusual, but it makes perfect sense when you think about how couples choose their suppliers.

Sometimes they see a live demonstration at a wedding fayre, experience the magic for themselves and immediately understand how much it could add to their day.

More importantly, the consultation allows us to discuss their wedding rather than simply my performance.

That's where the value is.

A good wedding supplier shouldn't just sell you a product.

They should use their experience to help you make better decisions about your day.

What Should You Ask Before Booking a Wedding Magician?

Don't make your decision purely on price.

Look at the person you're actually inviting into your wedding.

Check their reviews. Watch genuine performances. Look at photographs from real weddings.

Find out about insurance and professional experience.

And speak to them.

You should feel comfortable that they'll interact appropriately with your family and friends and understand the atmosphere you're trying to create.

So, How Early Should You Book Your Wedding Magician?

Based on my own ACMAGIC bookings, 12–18 months before the wedding is very common.

But there isn't a magic deadline.

If you've found an entertainer you genuinely want at your wedding, my advice is simple:

Don't wait simply because you think entertainment is something you're supposed to organise later.

Find out whether your date is available.

See the entertainment for yourself if possible.

Have a proper conversation about your wedding.

And then make your decision.

The earlier you start that conversation, the better your chances of securing the supplier you actually want.
