Awards Are Great – But Real Customer Reviews Make All the Difference

I’ll start this blog with something that might sound slightly strange coming from someone who proudly describes himself as an award-winning wedding magician.
Awards are great.
I’m incredibly proud of mine.
Being recognised within the wedding industry means a huge amount to me. Behind every award are years of performing at weddings, constantly improving what I do and trying to give every couple and their guests something they’ll genuinely remember.
So this definitely isn’t going to be a blog telling you that awards don’t matter.
They absolutely do.
But if you’re currently looking for a wedding magician – or, in fact, almost any supplier for your wedding – I think there’s something you should look at alongside the awards.
Their reviews.
And I don’t mean three carefully selected testimonials on a website.
I mean real reviews from real customers.
Because an award tells you someone has been recognised for what they do.
Reviews tell you what they’re actually like to book.
And when it’s your wedding, that’s pretty important.
Your Wedding Isn’t an Awards Ceremony
When couples first enquire with me, they’re not really buying “magic”.
They’re trusting me with part of their wedding day. That’s a much bigger responsibility.
You’ve got your family there. Your closest friends. People who may have travelled a long way to celebrate with you. Possibly guests from two families who have never even met before.
And you’ve invited me into the middle of all of that.
So yes, you want the magic to be brilliant.
But you probably also want to know:
Will he be good with our guests?
Will he be professional?
Will he understand how a wedding actually works?
Can he entertain different ages and personalities?
What happens if our timings change?
Will our guests genuinely enjoy it?
I can answer every one of those questions on my website.
But there’s an obvious problem with that.
It’s my website.
Of course I’m going to tell you I’m good!
That’s why I think genuine customer reviews are so powerful.
They allow the people who have already trusted me with their wedding to answer those questions instead.
Awards Tell You One Thing. Reviews Tell You Something Different.
I don’t actually think this needs to be awards versus reviews.
The two complement each other.
An industry award can give you confidence that someone’s work has been professionally recognised.
A collection of genuine customer reviews gives you something slightly different.
Reassurance.
You start seeing what happened when a professional wedding magician performs at actual weddings.
Not a photoshoot.
Not an advert.
Not a perfectly edited promotional video.
A real wedding, with real guests and real reactions.
And if you read enough genuine reviews, something interesting starts to happen.
Patterns emerge.
Don’t Just Look at the Stars – Read the Words
This is probably one of the biggest pieces of advice I’d give anyone comparing wedding suppliers.
Don’t just look at the star rating.
Actually read what people have written underneath it.
Five stars obviously look fantastic.
But the words tell you far more.
When I read through my own ACMAGIC reviews, what makes me happiest isn’t simply seeing another five-star rating.
It’s seeing what people remember about the experience.
Customers talk about their guests.
They talk about people laughing.
They talk about reactions.
They talk about people still discussing the magic afterwards.
They talk about how I interacted with their friends and family.
They talk about those moments where an entire group suddenly erupts because something has happened right under their noses that none of them can explain.
And sometimes customers mention things I wouldn’t necessarily think to put in an advert.
That’s incredibly valuable. Because those comments tell future couples what having a wedding magician there was actually like.
A Great Showreel Shows You the Magic. Reviews Show You Everything Else.
I love a good showreel.
I’ve got plenty of videos showing genuine reactions to my magic, and they’re one of the best ways of giving prospective customers an idea of what I do.
But naturally, a showreel shows you the highlights.
Reviews can tell you about everything surrounding those highlights.
Was communication good before the wedding?
Did the entertainer arrive when expected?
Did they fit naturally into the day?
Were they good with the guests?
Did they work around the photographer and venue?
Did they know when to approach people?
And, just as importantly, did they know when not to approach people?
Could they adapt when things changed?
All of those things matter enormously at a wedding.
They’re just not particularly exciting things to put into a 30-second video.
Weddings Rarely Run Exactly to Plan
Anyone who works at weddings regularly will tell you this.
Timings move.
Photographs take longer than expected.
The wedding breakfast gets pushed back.
Someone important disappears precisely when they’re required for a photograph.
The weather changes.
And a speech that was definitely going to be “five minutes maximum” somehow reaches minute seventeen.
That’s weddings. And I think this is one of the biggest differences between simply being able to perform magic and being an experienced wedding magician.
You need to be able to adapt.
One of the most common examples is the period after the ceremony while the couple are having photographs taken. I've written a separate guide explaining what actually works for wedding drinks reception entertainment and why I think this part of the day is such a good opportunity to keep guests entertained.
One piece of customer feedback I particularly liked involved a wedding where the registrar was delayed.
That wasn’t in anybody’s plan.
But suddenly there was a group of wedding guests waiting around with an unexpected gap in the day.
That’s exactly the kind of situation where experience matters.
Rather than everybody staring at their watches wondering what was happening, I could start entertaining.
You can’t necessarily demonstrate that with an award.
But the customer can tell you about it in a review.
What Should You Look for in Wedding Magician Reviews?
If you’re currently comparing wedding magicians, I’d look at more than the overall score.
Look at how many reviews there are.
Look at how recent they are.
Look for reviews specifically mentioning weddings.
Look for detailed experiences rather than endless one-line comments.
Look at whether customers mention the magician’s personality and professionalism, not simply the tricks.
Look for comments about guest reactions.
Look at whether couples mention communication before their wedding.
And most importantly, look for consistency.
If one person says somebody was brilliant, that’s encouraging.
If lots of completely unrelated customers, over a long period of time, independently describe similar experiences...
That starts telling you something.
It’s one of the reasons I’m so proud of the feedback ACMAGIC has built across Google, Trustpilot, Facebook and my own website.
Not simply because of the star ratings.
Because of the stories behind them.
Awards can recognise achievement, but they don't necessarily tell you how someone will interact with your family and friends on the day. Personality, adaptability and the ability to read a room can be just as important as the magic itself. I've written more about this in what I believe makes a great wedding magician.
Recent Reviews Matter Too
I’d also pay attention to when reviews were written.
Someone may have been fantastic five years ago.
But what are their customers saying now?
Are they still active?
Are they still regularly performing at weddings?
Are new couples still recommending them?
Is the quality consistent?
Personally, I think a healthy review profile should continue growing.
Every wedding season should bring new couples, new venues, new experiences and new feedback.
That’s much more reassuring than finding a collection of glowing reviews that all seem to come from the same period several years ago.
Real Reviews Can Tell You What a Website Can’t
There’s another reason I think reviews are particularly important when choosing a wedding magician.
Close-up magic is very personal.
I’m not necessarily standing 30 metres away on a stage.
I’m walking up to your family and friends.
I’m joining conversations.
I’m performing inches away from people.
Sometimes the magic is happening in their own hands.
So personality matters.
You need someone who can read people.
Someone who knows how to involve the enthusiastic guests without making the quieter guests uncomfortable.
Someone who can entertain your mates at the bar and then immediately adapt when they reach a table containing your grandparents.
That’s difficult to communicate through a list of qualifications or an award logo.
But read enough genuine customer reviews and you begin to understand what that person is actually like around guests.
Are Awards Important When Choosing a Wedding Magician?
Absolutely.
After everything I’ve just written, I should probably make that clear!
I’m definitely not giving my awards back.
I’m incredibly proud of the recognition ACMAGIC has received within the wedding industry.
Those achievements represent an enormous amount of work and some fantastic moments in my career.
If you’re comparing wedding suppliers, I think genuine professional recognition is another useful piece of evidence.
But that’s exactly how I’d view it.
One piece of the puzzle.
Look at the experience.
Look at the videos.
Look at the personality.
Look at the professionalism.
Look at the awards.
And then...
Read the reviews.
Don’t Just Take My Word for It
This is probably the most important section of this entire blog.
If you’re considering booking ACMAGIC for your wedding, don’t simply believe what I’ve written on my website.
Go and do your homework.
Read my Google reviews.
Look at my Trustpilot reviews.
Have a look at Facebook.
Read the experiences previous couples have shared.
Watch my wedding videos.
Look at the genuine reactions.
Then decide whether I feel like the right person for your wedding.
Because ultimately, that’s what reviews give you.
Not another sales pitch.
They give you reassurance from someone who was once sitting exactly where you are now – looking for wedding suppliers and trying to decide who they could trust with one of the biggest days of their lives.
Awards Provide Recognition. Reviews Provide Reassurance.
I think that’s the simplest way I can put it.
I’m enormously grateful for every award ACMAGIC has received.
But I’m equally grateful every time somebody takes five minutes after their wedding or event to leave a genuine review.
Because awards are something I can proudly display.
Reviews are something future customers can actually learn from.
And when you’re choosing someone to walk into your wedding, approach your closest friends and family and become part of one of the biggest days of your life...
Real experiences from real customers make all the difference.
Looking for a Wedding Magician in Manchester?
If you’re planning a wedding in Manchester, Stockport, Cheshire or anywhere across the North West, I’d love to be part of it.
As a professional wedding magician, I can entertain your guests during the drinks reception, wedding breakfast or evening celebrations, creating those moments that get different groups talking, laughing and wondering what on earth they’ve just witnessed.
But don’t book me just because I tell you I’m good.
Read the reviews first.
See what previous couples and customers have said about ACMAGIC on Google, Trustpilot and Facebook, take a look at my wedding magic and awards, and then make your own mind up.
If you like what you see, get in touch and tell me a little about your wedding.
Your date may still be available.
