How to Choose the Right Corporate Entertainment for Your Event

Updated: Aug 18

Choosing entertainment for a corporate event is not quite the same as choosing entertainment for a private party.
You're not only thinking about whether the performance will be entertaining.
You're also considering the people attending, the tone of the event, the venue, the running order, your clients, your colleagues and the reputation of the organisation behind it.
In other words, the entertainment becomes part of the overall event experience.
I've worked at corporate events for businesses, event organisers, venues and hospitality teams, and one thing I've learned is that the right entertainer isn't necessarily the one with the biggest promises.
It's the person who understands the event, communicates professionally and delivers what they've agreed to deliver.
So, if you're choosing corporate entertainment, what should you actually look for?
If you're still exploring the wider options, my guide to corporate event entertainment ideas looks at different types of business events and what tends to work best.
What Makes Corporate Entertainment Different?
Corporate events often involve a wider range of people and objectives than a private celebration.
You might have:
Clients
Customers
VIP guests
Business partners
Senior executives
Employees
Potential customers
Guests from different industries or backgrounds
The entertainment therefore needs to be appropriate for the audience.
It should feel professional without being stiff, engaging without becoming intrusive and memorable without taking over the event.
That balance is particularly important when the entertainment represents, even indirectly, the organisation that has booked it.
Why Experience Matters
One of the first things I'd look at when choosing a corporate entertainer is relevant experience.
Not simply:
"Have you been performing for a long time?"
But:
"Have you worked at events like mine?"
A magician who regularly performs at birthday parties may be excellent at birthday parties.
A corporate event can require a different approach.
Networking events, conferences, exhibitions, awards evenings, client hospitality and company celebrations all have their own rhythm and expectations.
Relevant experience means the entertainer is more likely to understand how to work within those environments.
What Should You Look for in a Professional Corporate Entertainer?
There are several things I'd consider before making a booking.
Experience
Look for evidence that the entertainer has worked at genuine corporate events.
Professional communication
Pay attention to how they handle your enquiry. Do they ask sensible questions? Do they
understand your brief? Do they communicate clearly?
Flexibility
Corporate events change. Speeches overrun. Guests arrive late. Schedules move. Your entertainer needs to be able to adapt.
Guest interaction
The ability to read a room is particularly important with close-up magic. Not every guest wants to participate in exactly the same way.
Reliability
You need confidence that the person you have booked will arrive prepared, on time and ready to work with your event team.
Reviews
Look for feedback from people who have booked the entertainer for similar events rather than relying only on testimonials from unrelated occasions.
You can also read ACMAGIC's corporate reviews and client feedback to see what organisers and companies say about their experiences.
What Does Professional Communication Look Like?
Good corporate entertainment starts before the event.
A professional supplier should want to understand:
What type of event are you organising?
Where is it being held?
How many guests are attending?
Who are the guests?
What is the running order?
When would you like the entertainment to happen?
Are there important presentations or speeches?
Is there a particular theme or message?
The answers help determine whether the entertainment is actually suitable and how it should be delivered.
If an entertainer never asks about your event before giving you a price, I'd consider that a warning sign.
Does the Entertainment Fit the Event?
This is probably more important than the headline act itself.
Imagine a formal conference where the entertainment interrupts important presentations.
Or a networking event where guests are expected to sit down and watch a long performance when the purpose of the event is conversation.
Or a product launch where the entertainment has absolutely no connection with the tone or audience.
The entertainment may be excellent.
It is simply in the wrong place.
Good corporate entertainment should fit around the event rather than forcing the event to fit around the entertainment.
Why Flexibility Matters at Corporate Events
No matter how carefully an event has been planned, something will usually change.
The meal takes longer.
The keynote speaker runs over.
A group of guests arrives late.
The room layout changes.
A presentation finishes early.
A flexible entertainer can adapt to those changes.
With close-up magic, that can be particularly useful because the entertainment doesn't depend on a fixed stage or a single performance slot.
I can move between groups, pause when something important is happening and adjust the pace depending on what is happening around me.
What About Branding or Personalisation?
For some corporate events, there may be an opportunity to personalise the entertainment around:
A product
A service
A campaign
A company message
A theme
A launch
Company branding
But I don't think every event needs branded entertainment.
The key is whether the customisation genuinely improves the guest experience.
When it does, it can create an interesting connection between the brand and the experience.
When it doesn't, good close-up magic may be the better choice.
For more on when personalised magic makes sense, see my guide to branded corporate entertainment.
How Important Are Reviews?
Very.
But I'd look beyond the star rating.
Read what people actually say.
Do corporate clients mention:
Professionalism?
Reliability?
Guest interaction?
Communication?
Flexibility?
How the entertainer fitted into the event?
Those details tell you much more than simply knowing that somebody received five stars.
For example, a corporate events lead at Hyatt Hotels has worked with me over several years and specifically mentions my professionalism, service and reliability when working with corporate groups and clients.
That's the sort of evidence I'd want to see when choosing a supplier.
Should You Choose the Cheapest Corporate Entertainer?
Not necessarily.
Price is obviously relevant, especially when you're working within an event budget.
But I would also consider what you're actually getting.
A cheaper quote isn't much use if the supplier:
Doesn't communicate properly.
Has little relevant experience.
Can't adapt to the event.
Needs more support from the organiser.
Or isn't suitable for the audience.
Likewise, the most expensive option isn't automatically the best.
The question should be:
"Is this the right supplier for this particular event?"
What Questions Should You Ask Before Booking?
I'd suggest asking:
Have you worked at events like ours before?
How would you recommend using entertainment during our event?
What do you need from us before the day?
How much space do you require?
What happens if the running order changes?
Can the entertainment be personalised?
Are you insured?
Do you have reviews from similar corporate events?
A good entertainer should be comfortable answering those questions.
In fact, they should probably be pleased you're asking them.

Why Close-Up Magic Can Work Well for Corporate Events
Close-up magic has a practical advantage in a corporate environment.
It doesn't normally require:
A stage
Large technical equipment
A dedicated performance area
A full audience sitting down
Instead, the magic can be performed directly among guests.
That makes it particularly useful for:
Networking
Drinks receptions
Conferences
Exhibitions
Client hospitality
Awards evenings
Corporate dinners
Company celebrations
It can also work alongside conversations rather than replacing them.
What About VIP and Client Entertainment?
When you're entertaining important clients or VIP guests, the quality of the experience matters.
Close-up magic can provide something personal and interactive without requiring a large production.
Guests aren't simply watching from a distance.
They experience the magic directly.
For smaller groups, client dinners or hospitality events, that can create a particularly personal type of entertainment.
If you're entertaining important clients or senior guests, I've also covered VIP corporate entertainment and client hospitality in more detail.
How Do You Know an Entertainer Is Right for Your Event?
Ultimately, I'd look for three things.
First, evidence that they can deliver.
Second, evidence that they understand corporate environments.
Third, confidence that they will make your job easier rather than harder.
That doesn't necessarily mean the entertainer with the biggest website, the longest list of claims or the highest price.
It means finding someone whose experience, personality and approach match your event.
Why ACMAGIC for Corporate Events?
I've performed at corporate events ranging from networking functions and conferences to awards evenings, hospitality events, company celebrations and client events.
I've also worked with event professionals and corporate clients where reliability and communication are just as important as the performance itself.
My approach is simple.
Understand the event.
Understand the guests.
Understand what the organiser needs.
Then make the entertainment fit.
You can find out more about corporate event magician services on the ACMAGIC corporate events page.
Final Thoughts
Choosing corporate entertainment should start with the event rather than the entertainer.
Think about what you want your guests to experience.
Think about the purpose of the event.
Think about the audience.
Think about the running order.
Then find an entertainer who can work within those requirements.
The best corporate entertainment should give guests something memorable to experience while making the organiser's job easier.
And that, ultimately, is what I'd look for when choosing a corporate entertainment supplier.
